I parked in the back of Bleu's place in Maryland. They brought me out waffles in the morning, and we traded shirts, something of mine for a pink op ivy crop top that I still have to this day. That morning I drove over to Apes Estate to hang out with April, and we talked for a while before getting a tour of their house. One of the kindest, sweetest humans in the entire world, it's always a treat when our paths cross. I stayed somewhere outside of town, if I recall. I made the drive to Philly to try to skate FDR, which, with my healing foot at the time, wasn't much use, but I tried anyway.
I made my way to New Jersey for the first time, and was treated to Tank Girl on VHS and Monkey Ball on Gamecube until midnight by Elaina, after which I slept for four hours until we woke up early enough to see the sunrise. At this park on the north shore of New Jersey where we could see the light glinting off the skyscrapers of Manhattan on the other side of the sea. It was so fucking worth it.
Kept driving ever north through Connecticut, through Rhode Island, all the way to the tip of the cape in Massachusetts. I heard that Provincetown was the gay vacation destination, and immediately felt out of place with my crusty traveling self. Too queer for the gayest town I suppose, or maybe just too broke.
On the north shore of the cape, I remember it so fucking clearly. I wanted to go for a swim, and it was raining. I figure, I'm going to get wet anyway, so I change into my swimming clothes and walk down to the beach where everyone is packing up and leaving. I jump into the ocean, the only person in the water because I guess everyone was scared of getting wet at the beach, and this pack of seals just swims right past. Close enough to touch, and I was the only one who got to experience it. It was fucking magical.
After that, I kept on driving up to Portland, Maine. This was the point that I was trying to get to, the goal of the journey. It was the farthest north I'd ever been. I took some pictures of the light houses, ate a lobster roll, got back in the van, and started driving west.
lyrics
Well I woke up to some breakfast food
Made by my friend named Bleu
I thanked them for their kindness and the spot where I stayed
And then I started headin on my way
Well I made my way to Lancaster
I saw April and Pebbles there
And that little dog Banjo, and their sweet lovely home
I can’t wait to come back for a show
Well I’d spend my time
Passing all those Amish horses by
And I’ll drive right in
To FDR skatepark with a grin
Well I saw the sunrise with Elaina
After a nighttime cube of games
New Jersey is strange but the bagels are great
Fuck Manhattan I’m headin upstate
Connecticut’s a wooded street
A suburb for that New York crete
But Blue Lane Frontier got providence near
To perfect wish the bars were serving beer
Well I took a dip
With a group of seals in the atlantic
As the rain came down
In Provincetown with rainbows all around
Well I walked up to
That ocean blue
Where the light house shows the shore
Well I made it to
That ocean blue
And I saw the islands fly
Well this is where I’m meant to be
A traveler from sea to sea
Every mile on the road brought me stories of old
And friends and family in between
Well I’ll see you all out there someday
No schedule, we can’t be late
Yeah we’ll dance and we’ll sing and we’ll talk till the sun
Rises up and warms up everyone
But I’ll say, goodbye
Just for now until it’s warm outside
Oh the spring will come
And then we’re gonna have some fuckin fun
Hi we're a couple of queerdos that write songs that are punk and folk and everywhere in between. Fuzzed out violins, fast paced guitars, singing our hearts out. Learning to wield hope like a baseball bat <3
John Underwood is a ten-piece one-man-band, and he seems to be producing new instruments from his infinite beard every time I see him. He's an incredible musician, and deserves a proper listen to <3 Flower Crown Me A Queen
Bobby's Oar is one of those projects where you notice something new on every listen. Greg's writing and playing style are infinite influences on me, and Not What I'm Looking For is just incredible. Flower Crown Me A Queen
You haven't heard of Escape The Stake yet, but you will. This is everything that got me into folk punk in the first place, plus a little more. Pay attention, this person is fucking going places! Flower Crown Me A Queen
